Rotary International

Rotary International is the world's first service club organization, with more than 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs worldwide. Rotary club members are volunteers who work locally, regionally, and internationally to combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, provide education and job training, promote peace, and eradicate polio under the motto Service Above Self.

Rotary Club of Salt Spring Island

The Rotary Club of Salt Spring Island was founded in 1969, and celebrated its 50th anniversary in May 2019. Like other Rotary Clubs all over the world, the Salt Spring club is a service club that raises money for both local and international charitable projects and provides opportunities for hands on volunteer work.

The club and its members contribute funds to Rotary International’s major health project, which in collaboration with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and World Health Organization, is nearing to goal of eradicating polio. At the local level, the club is a major sponsor of Salt Spring Literacy and its annual Giant Book Sale which raises money to support their work in helping children and adults improve their reading skills.

In the past the Rotary Club of Salt Spring Island build the Rotary Marine Park in Ganges with its signature golden mermaid and created the associated dinghy dock which provides space for boaters visiting Ganges town to come ashore.

The keynote annual fundraiser, Crabfest, is held on the second Saturday of July. At Crabfest you will find Rotarians serving up a feast of crab in the Rotary Marine Park alone with live music.

Each Christmas, the club puts on a beautiful display of lights at the entrance to the park which adds to the colourful decorations residents and visitors experience throughout Ganges.
